Last year, the Seahawks unceremoniously fired head coach Pete Carroll. This year he is looking for a new NFL player.
Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports that Carroll wants to return. Which means, frankly, that Carroll’s agent specifically said this to Schefter in the hopes that Schefter would release it to the world, in the hopes of stirring up public opinion. Then, Carroll’s agent I owe a lot of time to Schefter.
And it is how is sausage made.
Carroll, according to the strategic report/leak, specifically expressed interest in the Bears’ vacancy. Which obviously means nothing, unless the Bears are interested in Carroll.
Since the team’s No. 1 goal (we’re told) is to hire a coach who will get the most out of quarterback Caleb Williams, a defensive coach whose best NFL teams were fueled by this side of the ball probably won’t. being the right guy to team up with Williams.
Carroll could be a good fit elsewhere, depending on the franchise’s specific needs and goals. He’s only a year older than Bill Belichick. Unlike Belichick, Carroll has had success without Tom Brady on his team.
It’s hard to blame Carroll’s agent for trying to use the media to publicize Carroll. That’s the agent’s job. However, it is not the role of the media to engage in consideration Public relations to coach candidates.
It’s one thing to express authentic, organic, unsolicited opinions, as we did recently when questioning whether Brian Flores’ lawsuit against the NFL and several teams would stand in the way of a second head coaching opportunity . It’s another thing to let your strings be pulled by “sources” (probably just one source, but putting it in the plural always sounds better) who want to scratch your back – and who will return the favor, perhaps several times.
