Basketball recognition with three counties

The future of Peekskill basketball looks shiny.

Last season, the three and sixth year basketball teams of Peekskill experienced solid campaigns. The fifth year team has narrowly lost the final of the championship in division B, falling against Somers – Allegretti, 23-22. Meanwhile, the sixth year team of Peekskill went 12-2 for the season, went to division A and reached the quarter-finals, where they lost against Pleasingville, 55-38.

In recognition of their hard work and their achievements, the common council of Peekskill honored the two teams at its meeting on April 14. During special recognition, each player and coach received a certificate from the mayor Vivian McKenzie.

According to the director of the community hub, Johnathan Zamora, this is the first time that Peekskill has participated in the Tri-County League for several years. Created in 1997, Tri-County Basketball League (TCBL) focuses on the supply of competitive basketball to young people living in the counties of Westchester, Fairfield and Putnam. The League has around 200 teams each season and 10,000 young men and women have played TCBL basketball.

“It was a program that I learned for the first time through conversations with Dontae (Harris), as something that had happened over the years,” said Zamora at the meeting. (The city held testing For their teams of three counties in early October, the final teams later this month.)

The leisure manager, Dontae Harris, who is recognized for having rekindled the program, also spoke during the meeting of the council. “It was an excellent program for children because we want to be a feeder program – because when they arrive in high school, they have already played together and they already have this chemistry and they know what it is to win.”

“Even if we failed in the championship, getting there – the fifth year team – this is the first time they have played together as a unit and half of the team was fourth year students.” Harris highlighted the importance of young players faced with older competition to prepare the challenges of university basketball.

In response to Harris, the mayor McKenzie said: “Dontae, I want you to recognize that your work does not go unnoticed. Putting these programs together and working and that it happens – is really a major achievement. We want you to know that we see you. ”
