A building on Quinpool Road in Halifax which contained apartments, companies and a restaurant is a “loss”, after the fire broke out during the night.

The firefighters were called around midnight and at 8 a.m., a new crew arrived to relieve colleagues who worked throughout the night.

“This morning, when we arrived, obviously the fire had not been released. It is still within the walls and everything,” said the chief of the district Brad Connors with Halifax Fire.

“We have had the excavator here now. They will start to dismantle the building and the crews will wet the wooden stuff just so that it does not do any more. We have some other concerns that we will deal with throughout the process.”

The building contains apartments on the upper floors, as well as a well -known restaurant called Naan N Curry.

Connors said the fire was particularly difficult to fight due to building the building.

“In a fire like this, because of the construction, there is an empty space between the basement to the roof. The fire goes up in the walls and it is very difficult for us to fight,” he said.

“At the time now (there is) no harm to any individual, no one was injured. The building is a loss at this stage anyway. So we are mistaken for caution. The excavator helps us to separate the building, then we will set fire by doing so. ”

Traffic was blocked in the two directions of Bloc 6300 from Quinpool Road on Friday morning.

Frank Gomes, who has been working at the Indian restaurant as a chef for several years, said it was an emotional morning.

“I’m shocked. And I’m actually here crying,” he said.

“I felt (like) it’s my family. I don’t only think of me, I think (of these) who work there. “

Paul Britton, the director of the nearby McDonald’s restaurant, delivered café to firefighters.

“It’s terrible, but it seems that the community is working to help, so I thought I joined,” he said.

“The fire service works on a coffee so I brought them coffee for today.”

According to the social media of the firefighters’ union, the local restaurant, Mezza, also brought food for the crews.

“After a long night, your support was much appreciated,” wrote professional firefighters from Halifax, local section 268 of the IAFF.

At the end of the afternoon, demolition teams were on the scene to demolish the structure.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will start the fully contained fire once.
