Golden Globes host Nikki Glaser has one request for Sunday’s star-studded audience: Don’t take yourself too seriously.
The comedian will be the first solo female to host the awards ceremony, which takes place on January 5, and although she wants to set a light and “celebrative” tone with her opening monologue, Glaser says she will bring absolutely the same energy at the Globes that she brought at the Tom Brady roast in May.
“I’m doing what I was hired to do, which is I got this from the Tom Brady roast. That’s not lost on me,” she told Yahoo Entertainment during the Golden Globes red carpet on Thursday. “So I’m going to talk about it, for sure. It won’t be watered down, (but) the tone will be different for it.”

Hosts are now expected to grill celebrities in the Golden Globes audience. Sometimes it goes well (Ricky Gervais in his first four years) and sometimes it’s clear that celebrities believe a line has been crossed (Ricky Gervais in 2020.) However, Glaser doesn’t think stars should fear her.
“I’m not going to go so hard that anyone gets offended,” she said. “I’ve made it a point not to do that, and it’s not to disappoint anyone hoping that I’m going to pull a Ricky Gervais. I’m not Ricky Gervais. This isn’t my last Golden Globes, it’s is my first. He really worked hard in his last match. He was ready to burn the bridges (because) it didn’t matter anymore.”
This does not mean that Glaser, who is also a Golden Globe nominee in the category Best Performance in a Stand-up Comedy on Television for HBO One day you will diewill “kiss ass up there all the time”.
“Celebrities shouldn’t be nervous because it’s a great opportunity for them to look cool,” she said. “People at home feel disconnected from celebrities. Even though it’s one thing we love about them to put them on these pedestals, we’re really looking for a little humanity from them. And I would really encourage celebrities to laugh at jokes about you I know it sucks sometimes I’ve been the butt of jokes at roasts and I’ve had to laugh through my tears at being hurt, however, I’m not going to call you mean. woman with horse head, That’s why I had to laugh.”
Glaser added: “So if I make a joke about a bad movie that you once made that you had nothing to do with other than the fact that you were great in a bad movie, laugh. is a very easy way to appear likeable to the public and in fact, it’s a great PR move. Everyone in your camp should encourage you to laugh at jokes. It doesn’t make you cooler not to laugh. …I’m trying to make you look good harm. to anyone’s career.”
When asked if anything was off-limits, Glaser said she had no interest in wading into the It ends with us drama.
“I think the The Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni thing is such a hot topic right now that even a simple mention of it will make it seem like I might be on the wrong side of things, even though I never will be,” she said. “I don’t want to also not give his name one – I’m angry, I even know his name, to be honest with you, so I don’t need to say it anymore.
As for whether she will go into politics, Glaser said “people are just tired of hearing about it, even though it’s imminent and in the air.”
“There will be a nod, but it won’t be too harsh. I made a good point about not going too far,” she said.
Overall, Glaser wants to put the audience at ease.
“I think a lot of times we can project our own nerves onto guests we’ve never seen before. Like, ‘Are they okay? Oh my God, I would be so nervous. Is she tripping? “I just want to go out and make everyone feel like they’re in good hands, because the host really sets the tone for the whole evening,” she said. “The tone is celebratory, but let’s also laugh at the ridiculousness of the state of the world we’re all dressed in and give out awards for playing pretend. We have to recognize that it’s silly, even though it’s amazing. “.
For anyone wondering, no, Glaser is not told anything. not to say by the Golden Globes. President Helen Hoehne told Yahoo Entertainment that the comedian had carte blanche.
“She can say whatever she wants. We have no control over that,” Hoehne said. “(Nikki) doesn’t direct anything from us. I don’t even get to hear anything before the show, it’s really up to her.”
The 82nd Golden Globes will air January 5 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and stream on Paramount+ with Showtime.
