Changes to Carnegie classification of higher education establishments Present new criteria to categorize colleges and universities and link students access and return on investment to institutional excellence.

Developed 50 years ago to organize the higher education sector, Carnegie classifications have become associated with prestigious research levels, with the selectivity of students and diplomas.

The redrawn frame moves the emphasis on the results and responsibility of students in the higher education sector and prioritizes the factors of social and economic mobility. Carnegie analysts announced the new approach in 2022.

“If colleges and universities must remain relevant in the 21st century, we need a renewed social contract between higher education establishments and the American people, focused on the success of students,” wrote Timothy Knowles, president of the Carnegie Foundationand Ted Mitchell, president of US education on education (Ace), in “renew the social contract for higher education”, published on the Higher education today website.

The new one “Institutional classificationGroup colleges and universities in peers’ campuses according to several characteristics, including types of diplomas and main areas of study. Previously, the Carnegie classifications organized colleges and universities by highest academic programs and diplomas.

Revised classifications represent the biggest changes since the national framework was standardized in 1973. Revisions lend clarity and give decision -makers, researchers and more accessible and relevant students to compare institutions and gain research funding, according to Carnegie analysts. Colleges and universities also use data to inform institutional priorities.

“I like to consider the Carnegie classification as a tool that captures the situation in higher education,” said the Prabu David provost. “The new methodologies allow us to adjust the view and zoom in to see more fine details on how groups and individual institutions contribute to this sector. These results say that we are on the right track and in the right group of universities. ”

The institutional classification includes 31 different categories to assess an institution. Laughter is described as a medium -sized university with the following characteristics:

  • Institutional classification: mixed, undergraduate / graduate-doctorate;
  • Student access and income: lower access, higher gains;
  • Special focus: technology, engineering, science; And
  • Research activity designation: Research 2, high research expenses and doctoral production.

Rit retains its designation R2, which is now described as “Research 2, high research and doctoral production expenditure. “(In 2016, Carnegie’s classifications changed the designation of RIT from “Masters – Understanding” at “doctoral university – moderate research activity”. In 2019, Rit was reclassified again as R2 university with “High research activity”.)

The Carnegie and ACE Foundation has simplified the measures and facilitated institutions to qualify Research status-1 . By separating the research activity from the institutional classification, Carnegie analysts hope to reduce competition for R1 status.

Nevertheless, the designation calls on universities because it helps to obtain research money and attract students. Two new requirements clarify the path of a research university-2 as laughs to achieve and maintain eligibility for research-1. Classifications stipulate that a R1 university must spend a minimum of $ 50 million on research funding and reward, at least 70 research doctorates each year.

The Carnegie update also presents a new category, Classification of students’ access and income. This section assesses the way in which an institution promotes educational opportunities for students and their level of income eight years after having graduated, while taking into account the geographic context.

The institutions earning “higher access with higher income” have received designations from “colleges and universities of opportunity”. Carnegie classifications have identified nearly 480 establishments as models to promote students’ opportunities.

Depending on the comparison with other colleges and universities, Laughter is classified as an institution “lower access with higher gains”. Rit is one of the 261 colleges and universities which are part of this category, which includes the Boston College, the Tofts University, the Drexel University, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the University of Syracuse and the University of Georgetown.

At the same time, Rit welcomes students of a range of economic circles, he said, noting that around 30% of students laugh receive Pell subsidies.

“We are in good company in terms of reputation, science and technology, as well as commitment to access and social mobility,” said David. “We realize that different schools have different missions. We remain attached to students’ access. “
