The governor of Nebraska, Jim Pillen, signed transgender students from transgender sports for girls for girls on Wednesday, making state last to prevent transgender athletes from participating in women and girls.
Pillen signed the law flanked by dozens of legislators, female athletes and other defenders – including the former college swimmer Riley GainesWho made a name for himself as a vocal defender of the ban on transgender athletes of female sports.
The measure adopted by the Nebraska Legislative Assembly last week shattered by a single vote expressed according to the parties. It was reprimand Since its initial form, which has also sought to prevent transgender students from using bathrooms and changing rooms corresponding to their gender identity.
The sponsors have agreed to drop the bathroom and the ban on the locker room when a republican – the senator of Omaha Merv Riepe – said that he would vote against this otherwise.
The measure was introduced for the first time in 2023 by the Senator of Freshman at the time, Kathleen Kauth, but did not progress while the legislators argued with anger on the other bill of Kauth which sought to ban care affirming the sexes for transgender minors under 19. Surgery prohibition affirmed by the sexes – But not all the care asserted by the sexes – for minors who died later and were promulgated that year.
On Wednesday, Kauth promised to revive his ban and changing room ban next year, reiterating his rejection that people can determine their own sex.
“Men are men and women are women,” she said, and urged voters in the Riepe district to put him to support him.
Republicans behind the sporting ban say that he protects women and girls and their ability to compete enough in sport. The opponents say that with so few transgender students seeking to participate in sports, the measure is a solution in search of a problem.
Wednesday, less than 10 transgender students applied to participate in college and high school sports in the state, the Nebraska School Activities Association announced on Wednesday.
At least 24 other states have adopted similar prohibitions. President Donald Trump also signed a executive decree This year intended to dictate sports competitions fought before the court with Maine Above this state, authorizes transgender athletes in the sports of girls and women.
The American Union of Civil Liberties of Nebraska denounced the measure.
Executive Director of ACLU Nebraska, Mindy Rush Chipman, said that the ban “slaps the door” so that some transgender students fully participate in their school communities.
“This ban will only make problems,” said Rush Chipman, adding that “the constant targeting of LGBTQ + Nebraskans must stop.”
