Dr. Lawrence Greenblatt, distinguished doctor, professor and champion of public health, was appointed director of state health and chief doctor for the Ministry of Health and Social Services of North Carolina and will start his tasks on Monday, June 2, 2025. He is widely recognized for his commitment to high quality care for the improvement of mental health and socially added.
“Dr. Greenblatt is an innovator and a defender of public health in a long history of growing access to mental and physical health care in North Carolina,” said NC Health and Social Services Secretary Sangvai. “He has the vision and experience necessary to direct the public health efforts of our state when we work to create a healthy Carolina healthier for all.”
Dr. Greenblatt served for three decades as a general intervention, educator and head of the Medicaid policy with Duke University Health System, winning the recognition of his work to integrate behavioral health and drug addiction services in primary care.
Since 2008, Dr. Greenblatt has directed Duke’s Medicaid Network, first as Northern Piedmont Community Care, which was part of community care on the state of the North Carolina Network. He continued as a medical director of the clinically integrated network of Duke under the transformation of Medicaid in 2021. This well -managed network serves 100,000 registered Medicaid and supports dozens of practices.
“I am honored to be chosen for this important role in improving the health and well-being of more than 11 million North Carolinians who call this large state house,” said Dr. Greenblatt. “As a doctor and educator, I know the value of making sure that each person has access to mental and physical health care when he needs it and in the most appropriate framework for them.”
In 2012, he launched one of the first academic initiatives in the country aimed at promoting the safe prescription of opioids and to extend the treatment of opioid consumption disorders. He was also president of the NC Medicaid Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee and secretary of the NC Medicaid Physician Advisory Group. As a long-standing defender of the improvement of mental health care, Dr. Greenblatt co-directed collaborative Durham Crisis and has actively contributed to the local efforts of substance consumption and mental health planning.
