NCAA announces the change in participation policy for transgender student-athletes

Male category open to all eligible-at-ethlete students, the category of women limited to student-athletes assigned to birth, to schools responsible for promoting welcoming environments on all campuses.

Today, the NCAA announced that the Governors’ Council had voted to update the Participation policy for transgender student-athletes Following the Trump administration decree. The new policy limits competition in female sports to student-athletes assigned to birth only. Policy authorizes student-athletes assigned to birth at birth to practice with female teams and receive services such as medical care during practice. This policy is in force immediately and applies to all student-athletes, regardless of previous eligibility examinations within the framework of the Policy of previous transgender participation of the NCAA.

“NCAA is an organization made up of 1,100 colleges and universities in the 50 states which collectively register more than 530,000 students-athletes. NCAA Male Sports:

Whatever sex awarded to gender birth or identity, a student-athlete can participate (practice and competition) in male sports of NCAA, assuming that they meet all other conditions of eligibility of the NCAA.

* Student-athletes taking a prohibited substance (for example, testosterone) must complete the medical exception process.

NCAA female sports:

A student-athlete assigned to birth may not compete for a female NCAA team.

A student-athlete assigned to birth can train in a female NCAA team and receive all the other advantages applicable to student-athletes. The leadership of division I plans to adopt list limits in place of the limits of scholarships and policies of new practice teams are still in development.

A student-athlete assigned to birth that started hormone therapy (for example, testosterone) may not compete in a female team. If such a competition occurs, the team will be subject to legislation on the mixed team of the NCAA, and the team will no longer be eligible for the NCAA female championships.

A student-athlete assigned to birth that started hormone therapy (for example, testosterone) can continue to practice with a female team and to receive all the other advantages applicable to student-athletes.

Individual schools have autonomy to determine the participation of athletics on their campuses.

NCAA schools are subject to local, state and federal legislation and such a policy replaces NCAA rules.

Sports with mixed male and female NCAA championships are exempt from this policy (for example, Rifle).
