NBC News wants to play a game that has not always interested the biggest suppliers of the nation’s news.

While NBC Sports is preparing its coverage for this weekend Kentucky derbyNBC News Digital Outlet, NBCNews.com, will offer a center that offers content from NBC Sports, access to access to the free NBC Sports streaming channel and the sports coverage of a NBC News team has been built to cover sports. Also on site: Steve Kornacki sports explanators. The new sports center will also surface in the NBC News mobile application.

There is more to come, explains Rebecca Blumenstein, president of the editorial of NBC News. “We combine the in -depth expertise of NBC Sports and the exclusive content with the editorial forces and the wide range of NBC News to establish a destination on NBCNews.com for intelligent and accessible sports coverage for a large audience. Sports have an increasing influence on American culture, and this collaboration is interested in important leagues, events, moments and athletes is greater than ever. ”

In television companies, sports coverage has often been the province of a sports division of a network. Although local stations always have a regular anchor for new sports, there is rarely a break from David Muir, say: “World News Tonight” for the scores of the day. Offering this, of course, could dissuade a spectator from walking in ESPN – like ABC News, which is part of Walt Disney – and watch an hour of “Sports Center”.

Cable points of sale are not devoted to sports coverage in recent years either. CNN has made sports an essential in its range, with a night show anchored by Nick Charles called “Tonight Sports”. In another era, CNN even launched a sports-News, CNN / SI network. And Fox News Media tested Sports Concepts, launching a documentary on the Tide Crimson of the University of Alabama in February for its Fox Nation streaming service.

There may be more reasons noW To open a new game book. Sports programming has become more and more important for the economy of traditional media – in particular NBC. The network already devotes Sunday evening to NFL football matches, and thanks to The beginnings of a new agreement with the NBAAdd basketball up to two nights a week (and a third on the peacock streaming center). Indeed, next February, NBC will present hours of cover of the Winter Olympic Games as well as a Super Bowl.

Other NBC media tried to follow the ball. At “Today”, the Co-Ancres Craig Melvin and Savannah Guthrie described An effort aimed at weaving more sports in the programReflecting NBC’s links with NFL and NBA. Melvin has also participated in the cover of the Olympic Games and should do so again for the winter games of next year in Milan.

CNBC has also focused on sports. The Business-News point of sale now operates a vertical dedicated to sports affairs, and its offer includes a weekly newsletter, events, data and even documentaries. The company is separated from NBC News and will probably remain so. CNBC is among the properties that should be transferred to a new listed company by the end of the year.

NBC News launched an editorial team dedicated to sports. The editor -in -chief Greg Rosenstein joined athletics, while Rohan Nadkarni came from Sports Illustrated. Andrew Greif, a former sports journalist from Los Angeles Times, also contributes.

NBC News will then tackle the Preakness Stakes on May 17. “We are delighted to continue building ourselves,” explains Blumenstein.
