Australia and Chile lead global lithium production, which exceeded 180,000 tonnes in 2023. The third largest producer is China, which is also home to around 50% of global lithium refining capacity. Total U.S. production was about 1,000 tons, coming entirely from a field in northern Nevada. The state’s known reserves are estimated to contain more than 1 million tons of lithium, according to data collected by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology.
