Call all applicants of nature, bird enthusiasts and anyone looking to get involved in the community sciences on Nantucket! The Linda Loring Nature Foundation is delighted to offer two fun and easy ways for the community to get involved in the surveillance of birds this year: NANTUCKET Osprey Watch And Project Feederwatch. These opportunities are open to everyone and designed to be educational, engaging and easy to participate.
Nantucket Osprey Watch: This year, we are delighted to launch a new community science program –NANTUCKET Osprey Watch– Fucked on learning more on osprrey populations of the island. It is easy to get involved, and we welcome volunteers of all ages to help monitor the nests of Balbuzard fishermen across Nantucket.
For the first year, our main objective is to locate all the nests of Balbuzard fishermen around the island and to monitor them throughout the nesting season. The information collected will help answer important questions about the populations of Balbuzards, the preferences of the nesting habitat, etc. The best part? Anyone can participate; Our volunteers will be invited to submit brief observations of 15 minutes each week from April to September. The program is designed to be fun and interactive, and once you register, you can follow the progress of your nest throughout the season.

In addition, if you have an osprey pole on your property, we invite you to join the Nantucket Osprey watch. If you cannot engage in a full monitoring season, you can always help by simply signaling the fishermen’s nests that we may have missed on our card. When you went out for a walk, keep your eyes open! Ospreys love their platforms, but they have spread to nest in all kinds of places now. You could find them in old trees (their original preference), on roofs, radio towers, buoys and even on beach dunes.
The Nantucket Osprey watch allows everyone to follow the progress of ospreys on our island throughout the season. To see the latest updates for each nesting site, simply visit the website and click on the interactive card. At the end of the season, we will compile a report summarizing everyone’s observations.

You don’t need an elaborate feeder configuration – just a simple place for birds to eat! Whether you are an experienced beginner or ornithologist, it is easy to get involved. Your observations will help us to acquire a deeper understanding of bird populations and spring migration models.
