Who else, right? Senior Finn Gregg led the Nanooks to a huge win over Philomath in the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic in Ketchikan. That’s all basketball in this week’s Nanook Sports Minute.
Their opponents in Philomath, Oregon, went 19-8 last season and returned with a strong team this year. But it was the dominant play of Gregg, who had 26 points in the final, that led the Nanooks to the trophy.
The boys got off to a good start with a 28-15 lead at halftime. The two teams battled it out in the second half with the score 55-43 as the clock ended.
Senior Orson Hoogendorn finished with 11 points in the final and fellow rising star sophomore Cohen Booth finished with 8 points.
Gregg and Booth were both named to the all-tournament team.
After falling to Oregon’s Crook County team, the Lady Nanooks bounced back against Eagle River to reach the fourth place game in the tournament. There, they faced defending 2A state champion Metlakatla and lost 36-28.
One bright spot among the Lady Nanooks was freshman KJ West, who had 22 points in the Eagle River game en route to earning all-tournament honors. Kamylee Walters and Benny Lie also scored big points during the tournament.
This weekend it’s Nanooks vs Alumni for the annual Nome-Beltz Alumni tournament. We’ll talk about it in next week’s Nanook Sports Minute.
