Sioux City, Iowa – The University of Morningsoid is delighted to welcome 100 high school students on the campus on Tuesday, February 4, for the sixth academic reasoning tournament in science and mathematics (SMART). This event highlights the exceptional skills of students in mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics while promoting enthusiasm for education STEM.

During the day, students from high schools in nine zones will experience a variety of engaging activities, including competitive exams, STEM -focused sessions and a unique opportunity to get involved with current students in the morning in a panel questions and answers. The day will end with a prize ceremony celebrating the students’ achievements.

“One thing that I have found in the past is that our students and our teachers are really, really enthusiastic about participating and helping it,” said Dr Brian McFarlandDean of Arts and Sciences. “They participate in the students’ panel, but we also have to manage this thing, which depends a lot on students volunteers. We help them to organize things, to help Proctor exams, to help score many different small tasks, and they are always super excited about it. »»

Highlights of the event:
• Competitive examinations (9:30 am, Walker Science Center): Each student will run two 45 -minute written exams in mathematics, science, chemistry or physics, testing their capacities of critical thinking and problem solving. (Unauthorized calculators.)
• Quiz Bowl (1 p.m., WSC): Teams of four will contribute in a bol format quiz. Schools can enter several teams for this interactive challenge.
• STEM activity sessions: After competitions, students will work on STEM practical activities guided by Morningside teachers.
• Prize ceremony (3:15 p.m., Eppley Auditorium): Prices include the first price of a scholarship of $ 5,000 at Morningside University.

“In addition to hoping for having fun throughout the day, they may have a chance to win a fairly substantial prize,” said McFarland.

Intelligent competition has increased considerably since its creation. What started with 55 students in 2019 has now extended to nearly 100 participants, presenting the growing popularity of the event.

The University of Morningside is proud to promote a space where young learners can explore the STEM fields, connect with peers that share their passions and live the welcoming environment of higher education. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of these future innovators.
