Trump signs an executive decree prohibiting trans women from sports teams
President Trump has signed an executive decree prohibiting transgender women and girls from playing in school sports teams.
The House of Representatives of Michigan adopted a resolution strongly urging Michigan High School Athletic Association to ban transgender girls for girls.
Sixty-six representatives voted for this, including eight democrats. Forty-three representatives voted against.
THE resolutionWho does not carry the weight of the law, called on MHSAA to join the executive decree of President Donald Trump prohibiting women and transgender girls from participating in school sports for women and girls. “Allowing biological men to compete in female sports in defiance of a federal decree could put female athletes in Michigan in danger of injury, threatens the security and equity of competitions and undermines the intention of title IX,” said resolution.
The MHSAA assesses the requests of trans athletes on an individual basis. For the fall of 2024, two transgender girls participated in high school sports for girls. According to Equality Michigan, a plea group for the state LGBTQ + community, no trans athlete is registered to practice winter sports or sports for the next spring season.
“We all want sports and athlete students to be safe,” said Erin Knott, executive director of Equality Michigan in a prepared declaration published after the resolution. “This is why MHSAA already has rules on which can participate in different sports at different levels through a range of problems. They already have a process in place and are sports experts in schools. They do not need politicians in Lansing to overcome their expertise with a general ban.”
It is not clear if Trump’s executive order is in conflict with the anti-discrimination law of Michigan, Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act.
Speaking of the Legislative Assembly, Jaime Greene, R-Richmond, the sponsor of the resolution said: “We must recognize that we are all equal in dignity and rights, we are also biologically distinct from equity and sports security that we relax. The field of sports, which should not be forgotten.
The representative Emily DIEVENDORF, D-LANSING, spoke against resolution: “I want you to think about what a child means. Determine who you are trying to find a place to belong.
“I know what it is to be a queer child and it is alone. I know what it is to be our non -binary legislator and it is insulating and dehumanizing. This resolution is not a question of equity. It is not a question of protecting the sports of women. It is not a question of security because there is no threat. There is no threat.”
A copy of the resolution will be sent to Trump.
