Earlier this year, Mercer Health Surgery Center was honored to be part of the life-changing journey of a young African girl. Brought to the United States on a medical visa through Children’s Medical Missions West, Dr. Jeff Otte, Mercer Health’s chief of staff, was able to perform a distal femur procedure. Smith and Nephew generously donated the plate and screws needed for the operation.
As Oscar Wilde once said: “The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention.” » This act of profound kindness highlights the commitment and dedication of everyone involved in this incredible journey.
The first surgery at Mercer Health Surgery Center took place in February 2023. The girl was able to return home to recover between surgeries. She recently returned to Mercer Health Surgery Center to have her plate and screws removed in October 2024.
Betsy Beckman, director of surgery at Mercer Health, said: “The girl is doing well and has returned home to her family in Africa. It was incredible to know that Mercer Health had such an impact on this child’s life.
