THE Atomic scientists bulletin is proud to welcome Melanie Mitchell to her Science and Security Council (SASB).
SASB is a limited group of worldly recognized leaders with a specific accent on nuclear risk, climate change and disturbing technologies. Mitchell obtained a doctorate in computer science from the University of Michigan in 1990 and occupied positions of teachers or research at the University of Michigan, Santa Fe Institute, at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Oregon Graduate Institute and the Portland State University. She is currently a professor atSanta Fe Institute.

Mitchell’s current work fills the areas of artificial intelligence, cognitive sciences and complex systems. She is particularly interested in understanding the roles and mechanisms of abstraction, creation of analogy and reasoning in human intelligence and machine.

Melanie is the author or editor -in -chief of six books and more than 100 learned articles in the fields of artificial intelligence, cognitive sciences and complex systems. His 2009 bookComplexity: a guided tour(Oxford University Press) won the 2010 Phi Beta Kappa Science Book Award and its book 2019 Prize 2019Artificial intelligence: a guide to think humans(Farrar, Straus and Giroux) was preselected for the Cosmos 2023 price for scientific writing.
Melanie is the recipient of the senior scientific price of the Society complex system, the Cognitive Distinguished Scientist Award of UC Merced and the Prix Herbert A. Simon of the International Conference on Complex Systems. His public awareness of science includes an online course, “Introduction to complexitya quarterly column in progress for the scientific magazine, aNewsletteron AI, and a 2024Podcast seriesentitled “The nature of intelligence”.
