More than 100 Maryland companies located along the corridor of the Violet line received $ 1 million during the first phase of the Small Business Subsidies program.

The purpose of the program is to help companies closest to the impact zones to stay open and maintain current employees while developing. Subsidies for the initial phase varied from $ 1,000 to $ 40,000, for a total of $ 1 million.

The subsidy program is part of an effort of $ 4 million over four years to help compensate for small companies affected by construction.

In a press release, Maryland’s transport secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld said: “Maryland’s investment in the Violette line represents a great opportunity for economic growth that will link Bethesda communities to New Carrollton.”

“These subsidies will support small businesses whose operations are affected by construction to ensure that they are ready to prosper once the purple line is open,” added Wiedefeld.

More than 450 requests were received in the first round. The criteria for determining eligibility resisted specific immediate needs and the proximity of a construction site.

The purple line is a light train line of 16 miles and 21 stations that will extend from Bethesda to Montgomery County in New Carrollton in Prince George County. It will connect directly to the red lines, green and oranges from Metro to Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park and New Carrollton. The purple line will also connect to Marc, Amtrak and Local bus services. It should start the service in the winter of 2027.
