Halifax Regional Police are investigating the death of a Dartmouth man who was found in a tent at a designated encampment.
Officers responded shortly before 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the area of Geary Street. Police said they found a 56-year-old man deceased in a tent.
“The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The investigation is in its early stages and no further information is available at this time,” Halifax Regional Police wrote in a news release released Friday.
The Geary Street location is one of five current locations designated outdoor shelter locations in the municipality. According to HRM, the proposed occupancy is eight tents.

A camp resident, who spoke to Global News on condition of anonymity, said the deceased man was not sleeping in a proper tent. Instead, the resident said the man slept on what was left of an old tent and covered himself with tarps.
“Morale is quite low. It’s Christmas, someone has just died. It sucks, I mean I’m sure it could have been avoided,” the resident said.
“I mean, this guy didn’t have a tent.”
The municipality declined to comment, citing an ongoing investigation.
