Charlottesville, Virginie (WVir) – For many women, the symptoms of menopause can make daily life more difficult, from work to relationships.
An expert says that some helps could come from simple lifestyle changes.
Rather than starting at the pharmacy, managing menopause symptoms could start with simple changes in diet and exercise.
“We really have to focus on this,” said Dr. Joann Pinkerton, founding director of UVA Midlife Health Center.
Menopause symptoms can disrupt the lives of women, physically and mentally. Pinkerton says that the diet and exercise could help relieve hot flashes, sleep disorders, mood changes, etc.
“Can actually help prevent heat puffs or decrease them,” said Pinkerton. “If you do a really painful exercise, you can actually have more perspiration. Women must therefore balance. “
Finding this balance also means choosing the right foods. Estrogens, which help control cholesterol levels, drops during menopause. Pinkerton says that following a Mediterranean style diet rich in vegetables can help.
“There is no diet that works wonderfully for all women,” said Pinkerton. “During menopause, the body needs additional care because metabolism changes.”
Making lifestyle changes is not always easy. Pinkerton says that many women find it difficult to find time for themselves, but having a plan can make a difference.
“If women entering perimenopause, could simply say” I have to take time for myself “, you could reduce health risks,” said Pinkerton.
