King Charles is expected to deliver the Throne’s speech to Parliament on Tuesday, officially opening the new session. He will be the first Canadian sovereign to deliver the throne speech in almost 50 years.
“This speaks of our sustainable tradition and friendship, the vitality of our constitutional monarchy and our distinct identity, and the historical ties that are only strengthened,” said Carney in a statement before the arrival of the Royals.
“To this end, the discourse of the throne will describe the ambitious ambitious plan to act with urgency and determination, and to provide the change that Canadians want and deserve: define a new economic and security relationship with the United States, to build the strongest economy in the G7, to reduce the cost of living and ensure the safety of communities.”

The visit comes two years after Charles was crowned king and at a time when Canada’s sovereignty has been threatened several times by US President Donald Trump, who has declared several times since Canada is to be the 51st state.
Crown support in Canada has increased during these two years, with Ipsos Public Affairs questioning exclusively for Global News Show that 66% of respondents think that the country’s relationship with the monarchy is useful because it distinguishes us from the United States
This increased by 54% in April 2023, just a month before the coronation.

Sixty-five percent of respondents also said that Canada’s ties with monarchy are an important element in Canada’s heritage and play a role in shaping who we are, against 58% in April 2023.
“The royal visit is a reminder of the link between Canada and the Crown – a forged during generations, shaped by shared stories and based on common values,” said Carney.
“A link which, over time, has evolved, just like Canada, to reflect the strength, diversity and confidence of our people.”
Canada’s attitudes to the monarchy seem to warm up, with support for the reduction of links with the 12 -point crown since 2023.

The discourse of the throne is normally pronounced by the Governor General – the monarch representative in Canada – in which the agenda and the priorities of the government are described.
However, shortly after the federal elections, Carney announced that the king would pronounce this speech, a moment which, at the time, the Prime Minister declared “underlines the sovereignty of our country”.
Carney said in his declaration on Monday that the throne’s speech describes the “ambitious plan of the federal government to act with urgency and determination” and provide changes to Canadians.
