On the heels of Karen ReadThe acquittal of the accusation of murder of securities manufacturing, LBI Productions joined forces with Read and his main defense lawyer, Alan Jackson, to develop a scripted project telling the story behind the affair which sparked a national storm and lit conversations on justice, power and truth in America.
Whether the project is for the film or television has not been specified. CAA relearn the rights of cinema / television and plans are underway for a book project with involvement of Read and Jackson, with Luke Janklow by Janklow & Nesbit Repping Publishing Rights.
The story of Karen Read – recently declared not guilty after a trial for sensational murder which attracted the media coverage of Wall Mur and inspired a fierce public calculation – is described as more than an audience drama. It is a story on a targeted woman, a defense mounted against overwhelming dimensions and a system under control. With exclusive access to Read and Jackson, the project will reveal history behind the accusation, the counter-investigation of the defense and the cultural explosion that surrounded the case. Based on their first -hand experience, the project will reflect Read’s information on the conduct of investigators and will show Jackson’s architecture of a murder defense built from zero in the war room.
Read was accused of the murder of the Boston region’s police officer John O’Keefe, in February 2022, in a scenario leading to a very publicized legal battle. One evening, O’Keefe was found dead in a snow bank outside a house in Canton, Massachusetts, after attending a party. He would have been seen for the last time leaving the house, but the circumstances surrounding his death were not clear. Initially, his death was considered the result of a tragic accident, perhaps involving a fall. However, after a more in -depth investigation, the authorities began to suspect an unfair game, signaling O’Keefe’s girlfriend, Read, as a suspect. After two trials on his case, Read was found not guilty of second degree murder, of involuntary homicide guilty and left the scene of the death of O’Keefe. However, she was found guilty of having driven a vehicle under the influence and was sentenced to a year of probation.
In a declaration on the scripted adaptation, LBI production manager Julie Yorn said: “It is not only a legal thriller. This is what is happening when a single voice refuses to be reduced to silence. The case of Karen reflects the complicated moment at a time when we live. We will have the opportunity to show layers that have never been brought to light and tell the story with an emergency, a nuance and a care.
Criminal defense Jackson said: “This case has revealed how fragile the continuation of justice can be. Our hope is that telling this story, in all its complexity, will do what the courtroom could not – show the public what it really takes to face corruption. ”
Adding reading in his own statement: “I lived in this city with John. I saw what it takes for a small group of powerful people to be “above the law”. I fought for more than three years to overcome this power and this corruption, provoking the help of dozens of private investigators, of several lawyers, and finally – the federal government.
