Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has formed a new Canada-U.S. relations council to support the federal government as it deals with the new Trump administration’s promise to impose tariffs.

Among the 18 members of the council is Steve Verheul, who was Canada’s chief trade negotiator during the renegotiation of NAFTA.

Alongside him on the council are former prime ministers Jean Charest, Rachel Notley and Stephen McNeil.

The group includes representatives from the automobile industry, the nuclear energy sector, agriculture and the labor movement.

United States President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian imports when he takes office next week.
