The provost Alec D. Gallimore has appointed Professor Jungsang Kim to a new role supervising the training of the next phase of the Duke Science and Technology (DST) Initiative.

Kim, the distinguished professor of Schiciciano in electrical and computer engineering and physics professor, will serve as chief strategies of science and technology for the provost. He will work in close collaboration with the managers of Duke’s College / Schools and Units and Development Staff to create a strategy of concrete execution for the DST, ensure efforts to guarantee financial resources and coordinate the recruitment of innovative and entrepreneurial teachers in science and in technology throughout the campus.

“I am delighted that Dr. Kim direct our efforts to continue to raise science and technology in Duke through the DST,” said Gallimore. “Jungsang’s extraordinary career illustrates Duke’s commitment to excellence in research and innovation when we enter our second century and a new phase for the DST.”

Kim is an internationally renowned pioneer in the field of quantum information sciences. Member of the Duke faculty for more than 20 years, he headed the group of technologies of integrated multifunctional systems and developed a commercially viable approach to quantum computers by trapping atomic ions in an empty chamber and manipulating them with lasers. In 2015, he and the longtime colleague Chris Monroe put technology on the market by melting Ionq, which later became the first quantum IT Company of pure color.

In 2020, Kim joined Monroe and Ken Brown, her longtime collaborators, to launch the Duke Quantum CenterWho brings together teachers from all over the university to put information on quantum IT and quantum information to work on a variety of scientific problems and real world applications. In addition to two decades, DQC members have collectively attracted more than $ 250 million in funding to government, university and industrial partners. Kim is the associate director of the center.

“By focusing on the impact that students trained by Duke and the knowledge produced by Duke can do in our society, we can create a culture of scientific and technological innovation at Duke which can have a lasting impact. Duke Science and Technology can be a vehicle through which we can lead such a transformation. »»

Recipient of numerous prizes for his research, Kim is a member of the National Academy of Inventors, of the American Physics Society and Optica (formerly Optical Society of America). He resigned as director of IONQ technology in March 2024.

“In the past 20 years of my mandate in Duke, I saw a huge momentum reinforcing itself in Duke and in the triangle park research region at the forefront of science and technology,” Kim said. “By focusing on the impact that students trained by Duke and the knowledge produced by Duke can do in our society, we can create a culture of scientific and technological innovation at Duke which can have a lasting impact. DST can be a vehicle through which we can lead such a transformation. »»

Duke launched DST in 2019 to raise excellence in science through the retention and recruitment of teachers. The effort to collect funds has helped to recruit or keep more than 40 high -level researchers with a specific accent on the science of materials, IT and the resilience of the body and the brain.

“I am delighted to work with Professor Kim in this new role,” said Matt Hutter, associate vice-president for strategic initiatives. “His vast experience in industry and the university world makes him perfect ambassador for the DST and will significantly contribute to our success in the future.”
