Red Sox Voltger, Jarren Duran, said in a next documentary series that two years before his stars season in 2024, sports pressures led him to intense depression and suicide attempt.
“I remember when I crossed it and you start to lose a few games and you don’t do good, I have the impression that the world slips on you,” said Duran, 28, in the fourth episode of a Netflix series in eight games Entitled “The clubhouse: a year with the Red Sox”, which will make its debut on Tuesday.
The episode recounts Duran’s journey, a seventh tower choice in 2018, to make its debut in MLB in 2021 after having become one of the best prospects of the majors as one of the best strikers of minors. He also plunges into his difficulties shortly after being called to the majors, because the former inner field player had trouble adapting to the game in the outside field.
“They love you one day, then the next day, they have to grind you a little,” recalls Duran.
He said there were times when he thought that players were treated like “zoo animals”.
“Sometimes some fans take too seriously. I think they cross the line when they start talking about my mental health – making fun of me for that,” said Duran. “Call me weak. It just triggered me when you start talking about mental health because I have the impression that it is part of it – this loneliness. Some people manage it better than others. ”
The intense atmosphere of the Boston sports media market also worn it, he said.
“I remember that when I started to struggle, I said to myself, simply send me back (to the minor leagues),” he recalls. “Honestly, I had the impression that there was a dark cloud on me because it is so easy to look beyond positive things for me, then grasp negative things.”
This pressure to play came to a head at some point for the young knock.
“I couldn’t manage to tell myself how much I sucked every day,” said Duran. “I already heard fans. And what they told me: (it’s not like) I didn’t say to myself 10 times worse in the mirror. It was a really difficult time for me. I didn’t even want to be here.”
The director of the series, Greg Whiteley, then asked: “When you say:” here “, you mean here with the Red Sox or here on planet Earth?”
“Probably both,” said Duran before going into details.
In a press release, the president and chief executive officer of the Red Sox, Sam Kennedy, congratulated Duran for having been opened during the occasion to take care of his mental health.
“Jarren’s decision to share his story is an act of courage that goes far beyond baseball,” said Kennedy. “By opening up, he shows others who may have trouble that they are not alone and that asking for help is not simply good, it is essential. Each member of this organization continues to stand with him. He has our deepest admiration, he has always had our total support, and we are incredibly lucky to have it in the context of our team.”
Manager Alex Cora said he was aware of the situation long before Netflix filming.
“I mean, obviously, I had conscious,” said Cora on Monday before Boston’s planned match against Toronto. “Since I learned about it, as I did, I gave him support, love. I am someone to talk to. This door is always open. The relationship has grown over the years. Obviously, many private conversations on the subject. I really think the opening will help a lot of people.
“You need a person with courage and be transparent and authentic to do it. … I hope that is how we see it – that he will have an impact on others and that he will save lives with what he has done in Netflix.”
