Need to know

  • A man helped start his parents’ business, but now they call him “selfish” to want to pay a habitable salary
  • His parents opened a coffee when he was at university, and he contributed to his own time, money and workforce to the company
  • Man went to Reddit to express his frustrations and obtain external opinions

For five years, a young man poured everything he had in the coffee of the small town of his family – time, work, even his university savings. Now, at 26, he turned to Reddit for a perspective after having reached a breaking point.

Coffee was a family dream. His parents bought the building at the age of 21, and he helped transform it, install insulation, suspend the dry partitions and paint the walls. At the time, he was at university, juggling unpaid studies and changes.

“I started working here when I went to university. Whenever I had free time, I would be here working, ”he wrote in his article. “No time, I’m paid.”

When the money was tight, he gave what he could. He gave university savings, contracted student loans and even gave them his cocovid recovery checks, including improved weekly unemployment payments of $ 600 during the pandemic.

“As I was at university, my family was difficult in cash. So, all additional money I had from the university was given to them. I have contracted student loans, they pay them now, ”he says. “One of the requirements for a course was to have a paid internship.”

After graduating, coffee has become its full -time job. But the compensation remained shocking. “I work here 6 days a week for 47 hours a week,” he shares. “I earn about $ 40 in advice per week. And my parents may pay me $ 400 per month. ”

He lives at home, but his financial support is lacking. His car has not run for over two years. Although his parents cover insurance, he cannot afford repairs. He contributes to the grocery store, buys products for the shop with his own money and even maintains their rental properties using the equipment he bought himself.

“I tontify and maintain the 4 properties they have on a mower that I bought,” he adds. “They didn’t help.”

His unpaid work extended beyond coffee. He helped renovate his parents’ house and built an addition to them. However, when he raises concerns about money, he says he was dismissed. “They treat me as if I were ungrateful,” he wrote. “They say they pay me very well.”

Finally, he gave them an ultimatum: either he begins to receive an appropriate pay check, or he walks. “This has reached a break point where I told them that I should either get a pay check, or I will look for a different job and that I will be finished,” he shares.

In response, his parents offered a compromise – letting him renovate one of their buildings to start his own business. But they always expect him to work at coffee while launching his business.

That, he says, is not durable. “In June, I will no longer work at the coffee,” he wrote. “My parents say I am selfish, but other people say that what I do is more than reasonable.”
