ST. Louis — Uni won second place in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) All-Sport trophy during the 2024-25 school year, as announced on Thursday the League office, improving in an eighth place a year ago.
The finalist ends up linked to the Northern Iowa result of the All-Sport MVC trophy race after also finishing second in 2001, 2017 and 2019, as well as a pair of third-place performance in 2003 and 2007. Improvement at six places in 2024 is the largest jump of one year in a year. In addition, the 8.721 average score is the highest since the conference went to an average point system to allocate the trophy in 1993-1994.
The All-Sports trophy, which was awarded for the first time after the 1949-50 sports season, is based on the end of the school in each championships sponsored by the MVC. The teams awarded 12 points for the first, 11 for the second, 10 for the third, etc., and the total of the points accumulated is divided by the number of sports in which a particular school is in competition. For sports not sponsored by each MVC school, the points decrease by the number of competing schools (that is to say in a sport where 10 teams compete, 12/10 = 1.20, therefore the total points decrease by 1.20; 1st = 12, 2nd = 10.8, 3rd = 9.6, etc.)
The terms of baseball, basketball, football, softball, tennis and volleyball are based on a regular season competition. However, the institutions receive three bonus points for each league championship after the season won in these aforementioned sports. All other sports are determined by the end of the championship tournament or the championship competition.
During the 2024-25 season, the Panthers swept the regular season and the MVC tournament championships for a third consecutive year in volleyball, while the male athletics team took place first at the MVC indoor championships in March. Northern Iowa has also finished in the first three in five other sports, including male basketball, athletics in male outdoor, softball and the trail and female interior and exterior field.
“What year it was for our MVC Sport programs,” said the director of athletics Megan Franklin. “During this successful year, many individual, team and presence records were broken with another school record established in the total points scored in the MVC All-Sport Trophy race. It was great to encourage our panthers during the championship events of this year when our teams were standing on the podium by giving united with pride through their chest.
