Rockford, Illinois (WIFR) – More than 500 students from the college and secondary in the Rockford region put their skills in science to the test on Saturday at Rock Valley College.

Students participated in events in various fields for the regional sciences Olympiad, including experimental design, environmental chemistry and coding.

The organizers said that this competition has lasted for almost four decades on a national scale for almost four. It started with a group of science teachers and has now become a competitive event.

“It’s really important, I give a lot of credit to teachers who are the coaches because they spend a lot of time developing a love of science and engineering with their students. This is really important for the next generation, ”said Elizabeth Russo, professor of rock sciences at Rock Valley College.

The winners show up at the state competition next month at the University of Illinois.
