SAN ANTONIO – Angel Contero created Crafts That Bonita as she struggled to find joy in her work in the medical field. It’s been six years since she turned her small business into a full-time business, and she’s learned a lot from her experience.
“Sometimes you do something and you really think it’s going to be successful, and it’s a total failure. Sometimes something you think is the worst thing you’ve ever done, and you wonder, “Why did I do that?” sometimes it’s your biggest success.
Contero has always loved art and his hobby is now both his passion and his business.
His advice to those looking for a side hustle they want to grow is:
-
Set goals, starting with small and achievable goals.
-
Use social media wisely; you don’t have to pay to advertise. Create videos yourself and publish them.
-
Find a network of small businesses that can help you connect and find opportunities. If you can’t find one, create one yourself. Groups like Southside First and Women Unlimited are ones Contero recommends.
-
Register your business name. She said a DBA (Doing Business As) will protect your business.
-
Remember to keep a positive attitude.
“Be ready for growth. Whether you need a loan or an additional credit card, be prepared,” Contero said.
Contero recently gave a one-hour presentation at Southside First to help sellers prepare to sell at markets. Look at it here.
