The republicans of the house took a critical step to advance President Donald TrumpTax reductions and border priorities by Congress, a major victory for party leadership after having repressed a conservative rebellion on the price of the plan.
Thursday morning voting on the Senate budgetary plan – an initial first step in the long budgetary process – will ultimately allow Republicans to build the first major legislative measure of the president on a democratic filibusier. He crowned a dramatic week for President Mike Johnson, who was forced to cancel the plans for a vote a few hours earlier after nearly 20 Republicans demanded a guarantee of high spending discounts.
GOP leaders finally convinced them to support the plan on the way the boot, larger – and more difficult – fights for expenses for the next few weeks. He marked a victory for Johnson, who resulted in Trump on several occasions to adopt controversial bills that conservatives hate.
The speaker met the last group of retained before the vote Thursday morning, while he was trying to avoid an embarrassing defeat of his conference. And Trump applied the pressure, promoting his “big, beautiful, bill” On social truth and make calls to legislators.
The president famous The move of the room later during the day.
Representative Ralph Norman told CNN that Trump’s hearing, which had been in close contact with Johnson, had helped overthrow his vote.
“This has evolved in the past 24 hours. You have the president, you have the president, you have (the head of the majority of the Senate John) Thune,” said the South Carolina Republican.
Asked about the president’s promises, Norman said: “He was very encouraging. We are not going to have a deficit. We are going to have a minimum of $ 1.5 (Billion).”
Before the vote, Johnson and Thune sought to present a united front about how to move forward on Trump’s agenda. The pair delivered a joint declaration aimed at ensuring the conservatives of the Chamber that the Senate would support the abrupt spending reductions which were a solid collage point.
“We are committed to finding at least 1.5 billion of dollars in savings for the American people, while preserving our essential programs,” said Johnson unequivocal.
Thune, on the other hand, said that “our ambition to the Senate is that we are aligned on the Chamber in terms of what their budgetary resolution has described in terms of savings.”
“The speaker spoke about 1.5 billion of dollars. We have a lot of American senators who believe that it is a minimum. And we will certainly do everything we can to be as aggressive as possible to see that we are serious about it,” he continued.
A certain number of Republicans wanted to see Thune accepting expenses and Johnson to protect Medicaid despite these cuts. The question even remained a few minutes before the vote, to know if the commitments of the leaders had been sufficient.
In a tense conversation on the ground, the speaker offered insurance to a group of centrist republicans that the GOP would protect Medicaid in his future legislative program, according to a person familiar with the discussion.
Before the vote, Johnson and the head of the majority of the room, Steve Scalizes, huddled with a group of ten retained conservatives in a room right next to the house, hoping to obtain final insurance that they had convinced them to support the plan.
After the talks, Johnson remained optimistic that he had made it possible to cross the Logjam after the 24 -year negotiations on Wednesday. “We have obtained the votes,” he insisted with journalists by leaving the meeting to go to the ground.
After the vote, Johnson and other leaders of the GOP in the House celebrated the adoption by their chamber of the budgetary plan, but recognized that there was a difficult route to come while the Republicans seek to adopt a radical legislative package.
“It was a big step, because it will now allow us to move forward so that our committees really really really really written the Big and Beautiful Bill,” said Johnson. “There is a lot of work in front of us, and we are really excited about it.”
“Each step in this process will be difficult. We said it from the start,” said scalizes, telling journalists that “failure is not an option”.
