The Trump administration is trying to extend the flow of natural gas supply in the Northeast using interstate pipelines – a goal that has been blocked in the past by ferocious local opposition and democratic and local governments.

But Thursday, in the hope of obtaining federal support for the White House of Trump, an energy company announced that it wanted a second chance to build natural gas pipelines extending over hundreds of kilometers through the state of the Empire.

The goal? Offering reliable energy to the northeast.

What you need to know

  • President Donald Trump recently discussed pipeline projects with Governor Kathy Hochul, according to familiar sources with conversations
  • Hochul’s opening seems to have encouraged the Oklahoma energy company, Williams
  • Williams officials told NY1 that they had filed a petition with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to relaunch its project to improve the northeast supply which would take place under the port of New York in New Jersey
  • Environmental defenders said it should refuse new requests. This is what happened to the same two projects in the past – especially since the former governor who became the candidate of the town hall Andrew Cuomo ranked among the main opponents

President Donald Trump recently discussed pipeline projects with Governor Kathy Hochul, according to familiar sources with conversations.

NY1 asked Governor Kathy Hochul where she was held on Thursday.

“My message is what I said to the president, namely that I will make sure that any applicant of a pipeline or any energy project follows all state, local and federal laws,” she said during a revolution for a new bus station in port authority in the city center.

“That being said, we can examine this broadly and also consider the advantages at a time when energy prices are through the roof and families in all corners of our state suffer from high invoices for grocery store and public services,” she continued.

The opening of Hochul seems to have encouraged the Oklahoma, Williams energy -based energy company. Williams officials told NY1 that they had filed a petition with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to relaunch its project to improve the northeast supply which would take place under the port of New York in New Jersey.

Williams is also in talks to build the Constitution pipeline, connecting New York upstate to the Pennsylvania.

“NESE and Constitution projects are essential to combat persistent natural gas supply constraints in the Northeast, constraints that have brought about higher energy costs for consumers and increased dependence on higher fuels such as fuel oil,” said a spokesperson for Williams to NY1.

“I have to examine this with a different objective and will continue to engage in our climatic objectives. I believe in them, but also the realization that we must be more open and vast, but they will have to follow our laws and they know it. I was very clear about it, ”said Hochul.

Environmental defenders say Hochul should refuse new requests.

“These two not considered pipelines are part A in what we should not do if we want drinking water and healthy communities in New York,” said Mark Izeman, the main strategist of the Natural Resources Defense Council.

This is what happened to the same two projects in the past – especially since the former governor who became the candidate of the town hall Andrew Cuomo ranked among the main opponents.

“The last time, these two pipelines encountered a stiff and deep opposition, and that will happen again. And New York and New Jersey rejected these pipelines for threats of water quality,” said Izeman.

The New York Environment Conservation Department also refused to file the necessary water permits and, in 2020, the strict state climate law was invoked to kill the project to improve the northeast supply.
But this time could be different, according to Gary Labarbera, president of the Council of Building and Construction Trades.

“I think everything should be taken into consideration, and you know that when you talk about gas pipelines, it’s better union jobs. But I think you have to have an approach above,” said Labarbera.

However, construction could still be in months.

If the projects obtain federal approval, National GRID should modify its long -term energy plan, after which the Ministry of Public Service would examine the request.
