HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) – The holidays are here and local organizations in Central Virginia are taking advantage of the giving season.
For the second year, Henrico Sports and Entertainment Authority is helping make some children’s Christmas morning even more special.
The Salvation Army has put out this call and gifts are given to children in the Greater Richmond area every year, but sometimes gifts for boys and girls ages 10 to 16 are overlooked.
Now, Henrico Sports and Entertainment Authority is using sports to fill the void.
Items donated include: soccer balls, basketballs, soccer balls and tennis racks.
“That’s why you see types of sports equipment that are very suitable for this age group. We want young people to try the sport. You never know where it’s going to lead,” said Dennis Bickmeier, executive director of the Henrico Sports and Entertainment Authority.
Thanks to donations from people in the community, the organization makes the dreams of certain children come true.
“We want young people to dream big. We want to be able to have a healthy community. Sports provides that, it teaches kids sportsmanship, teamwork and all those things. So if you can put a ball in a kid’s hand or a bat in a kid’s hand to try baseball, whatever the sport is, who knows where those dreams could go,” Bickmeier said.
All items will be packaged and taken to the Salvation Army to fulfill the Angel Tree wishes.
