“A few weeks ago after the Dallas match, we went to Seattle and we were not very good for the first and a half period,” said head coach Scott Arniel. “I really liked the way we released this evening, obviously, it was a fantastic start to set up two quickly.”
The first goal came from Iafallo just 58 seconds from the competition. Scheifele started the game by skating the washer from the end of Winnipeg to the New Jersey area before sending a cross pass to Connor. He then sent it to Iafallo in the slit which revealed the washer in an open net while Jake Allen overrubs Connor.
The help for Connor, who played in his first game after his wife gave birth to their daughter, gave him 50 for the first time in his career.
Barely 54 seconds later, he was 2-0 thanks to Gustafsson, playing in his first match since March 6.
The New Jersey had the washer safely at their end when the players of the two teams changed, but Simon Nemec could not manage a simple pass, the turning point in Brandon Tanev. Tanev then led to the net and was refused by Allen, but Gustafsson overthrew the rebound at home for his second of the season and his sixth goal in 143 NHL games.
The Devils obtained the first power game of the match later in the period, but failed because they controlled possession for the majority of the first, holding the jets at a time in the 13 minutes that followed the goal of Gustafsson.
For a very short instant, the Devils thought they had cut their heads in two when Erik Haula hit a rebound with 5:34 to do in the first, but he immediately gone. Haula had hit Hellebuyck before blurring the rebound and the New Jersey did not challenge the call on the ice.

The advantage of the man of Winnipeg had trouble, but they took advantage of it. Allen stopped a single shooter from Josh Morrissey’s stick point, but Nikolaj Ehlers shook the rebound to the right of Allen where Iafallo was held. He glored the washer and hit him in the net to do it 3-0 with 4:15 to go in the second.
With less than a minute to do in the period, the jets did 4-0. Scheifele made a smooth game on the Blueline jets to keep Brian Dumoulin’s washer away and patinated the ice with. After taking it in the end of the Devils, he dropped him to Connor whose shot became wide, but after the washer was rebounded hard from the end boards, Scheifele cut him into the net on the side of the fold.
