Committing hard work and dedication to NMSU for 23 years, Harikumar Sankaran believes that it is a question of guiding the next generation of successful finance specialists at the time of their diploma. He is currently head of the College of Business finance department and is also a prolific researcher.
“We are like musicians,” he said. “For the public to appreciate all the nuances of music, we must keep our instrument attentive (research skills), have good scores (knowledge) and be immersed in music during performance (teaching).”
Sankaran joined the NMSU in 2002 after working 12 years at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and four years at the University of Miami, Florida. He received his doctorate. In finance at the University of Houston in 1987.
In addition to designing and teaching advanced courses, one of the strengths of its efforts to NMSU is to bring technology to class.
“With the help of Thornburg Investment Management and Thurman Case, a colleague former student of the NMSU, my colleague Ken Martin and I were able to obtain 12 Bloomberg terminals for students of the business college,” he said. “This advanced establishment has improved the experience in the students’ class and allowed many of them to find lucrative careers. Due to the lack of continuous funding, this installation has been terminated. »»
He supervised and published articles with several graduates and junior teachers. The Brown-Bag seminars of the College of Business are one of many of its efforts to mentorship.
Sankaran said that his hope as head of department is to obtain supported funding to bring these terminals for students. He is currently revising the study program according to comments from members of the business Advisory Council.
The other strengths of his career include the search for subjects such as the effectiveness of business investments, the capital structure and the remuneration of CEOs. His work appeared in the main financial and accounting journals, including the Journal of Finance and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.
