BOSTON – The director general of the American team in the hockey tournament to the confrontation of the 4 nations said that he would welcome President Donald Trump’s visit to the championship match between the United States and Canada on Thursday evening.
Bill Guerin, who played 18 years in the NHL for eight teams, said on Fox News that Trump’s presence would give a boost to the rivalry between the North American hockey powers. He has credited Trump’s pricing and talks about making Canada the 51st US state to increase the intensity of their match filled with the preliminary tour.
“We would like President Trump to be present,” said Guerin in the interview broadcast on Monday. “We have a room full of proud American players and coaches and staff. Listen, we just try to represent our country in the best possible way.”
The tournament marks the return of the best hockey stars to the international game after spending the last two Olympic games.
The United States beat Canada 3-1 on Saturday in a match that started with three fights in the first nine seconds. The quality of the game, the intensity of emotions and the geopolitical backdrop made comparisons with the victory of the Americans “Miracle on Ice” over the Soviet Union at the 1980 placid Olympic Games.
“I think there was a little political flair. It’s just the time we are,” said Guerin. “If you let him take over on you, then you are in trouble. But I think the players used it as inspiration.”
Since its inauguration of January 20, Trump has attended the Super Bowl and Daytona 500 from Nascar.
