Charleston, W.VA. (WSAZ) – Managers are a necessity for all sporting events. The senator of the state of Virginie-Western, Mike Woelfel, D-Cabell, said that times are difficult for those who choose to whistle.
“Officials are missed and threatened and threatened.
In February 2025, Woelfel presented Bill 531 of the Senate which proposed increased sanctions for those who commit assault and assault and injuries on sports officials and participants.
“The security of sports managers, players and coaches, for me, is a major problem and that’s what motivated me,” said Woelfel.
Bill 531 of the Senate proposed a fine of up to $ 500 and a prison sentence of up to six months for people who are guilty of assault against a sports official or a participant. He also offered a fine of up to $ 1,000 and a prison sentence of up to 12 months for people who are guilty of battery.
The bill has made its way through the legislative assembly with great support from heads of state, but the republican governor Patrick Morrisey finally decided to veto the bill.
Morrisey explained his decision in a letter sent to the Secretary of State, President of the Senate and President of the Chamber of Delegates, saying:
“I find that these offenses are odious. But I cannot justify a crime against an arbitrator has a minimum sentence which is double that for a police officer, especially when the first is compulsory. I would like to echo the feelings of the legislators: the individuals who devote their time to arbitrate and train our sports leagues for young people. The bill, as is currently written, and encourages the sponsor of the bill to work with my office to develop better legislation. »»
Woelfel is disappointed with the governor’s decision, but plans to introduce a similar bill next year.
“Reasonable minds can differ. So I can always see the other point of view. Instead of abandoning, what we do is that we improve it, and we do it again,” said Woelfel.
