After longtime party supply store Party City announced last month that all stores would close as the retailer ceases operations, sales on each store’s entire inventory are in progress before the stores close.
Sales on remaining inventory items are available for up to 75% off, an increase from an initial announcement last month that promoted items for sale up to 50% off.
The closures mark the end of nearly four decades of retailer activity.
CNN reported last month that Party City CEO Barry Litwin told company employees during a meeting Friday that the company was “winding down operations,” adding that their last day of employment would be December 20, 2024.
“It’s really important that you know that we did everything we could to try to avoid this outcome,” Litwin said during the meeting, according to the CNN report cited by several media outlets. “Unfortunately, it is necessary to immediately begin a reduction process.”
In 2023, the New Jersey-based holiday supply chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after battling rising prices and a decline in customer spending. As a result, the company had planned to close 22 stores.
At the time, the company said its franchise stores, subsidiaries outside the United States and its Anagram foil balloon business were not part of the restructuring and would remain core parts of its business.
According to Party City websiteThere are currently 32 stores operating in Illinois, 25 of which are located in the Chicago area.
