U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand announced Thursday that she will join the Senate Appropriations Committee in the next Congress, which is scheduled to meet Friday.
The upper house committee in Washington oversees federal spending and allocates funds to government programs and agencies.
“I am deeply honored to have been selected to serve on the Senate Appropriations Committee. This role is an incredible opportunity to ensure federal dollars are used to improve the lives of Americans, support hard-working families, and address the pressing challenges facing our nation here and abroad,” Gillibrand said in a press release. “As I assume this new position, I am committed to continuing to advocate for the needs of New Yorkers and look forward to helping provide federal funding to New York programs and organizations that help our great state prosper.
The New York Democrat will also continue in her current role on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Armed Services Committee. She will also serve as a ranking member of the Senate Select Committee on Aging.
Gillibrand was re-elected in November to a third full six-year term in the U.S. Senate.
