Atlanta, GA – June 2025– The Georgia Institute of Technology and the Emory University put medical and biomedical research to the higher level by moving seven advanced laboratories in Science Square, The first district of southeast life sciences. This expansion is more than just growth in square feet; It marks a major thrust to establish Atlanta as a hub of technology in the United States

“Science Square Labs marks a step forward for Georgia Tech and for the growing ecosystem of Atlanta life sciences. We are not only carrying out our research and innovations – we take a powerful momentum in the region, “said ángel Cabrera, president of Georgia Tech. “Our laboratories move to this space will attract the best talents and stimulate medical innovation. The movement opens the way to transformative discoveries, and we hope that others will join us to continue the evolution of Atlanta in a world center for medical breakthroughs. ”

This decision comes as Georgia Tech experienced a 46% increase in research prices from 2018 to 2024, proof of the institute’s rapid growth. By adding these laboratories, Atlanta strengthens its position on the national scene for advanced technologies and life science innovation.

  • Save lives: Early detection of cancer and more innovative immune therapies for healing damaged tissues and the management of chronic diseases, research that will be carried out in Science Square is tackling the health problems to which millions.
  • Feed a technological center: By combining research powers like Georgia Tech and Emory with new generation laboratory installations, Atlanta builds the brain and resources to compete with national technological centers.
  • Economic growth : Science Square helps attract the best researchers, startups and financing – Bring jobs, investments and opportunities in Georgia. More recently, Rider announced that they are moving their headquarters of research and development at Science Square.

The new Science Square laboratories will support the teams that come under the challenges that change life:

  • GABE KWONGRobert A. Milton Flesh, College of Engineering, develops a defense of cancer in two stages: mark the tumor cells with a synthetic “flag”, then overeat the T cells (white blood cells that fight on body infection) to find and destroy them. The first laboratory tests show that the technique works against breast, brain and colon cancers – and prevents regrowth.
  • Tara Deans And his team teaches cells new jobs – when to develop, what type of cell to become or how to release medicine. Their objective is to conceive of intelligent cells which can feel what is happening in the body and act as “living therapies”, providing treatment exactly where, when and at the necessary level.
  • Alex Vlahos Develops means to reprogram cells to understand and treat disease. His team manufactures new protein tools that help cells feel their environment, communicate with each other and respond to problems – repair tissues, fight cancer or calm a hyperactive immune system.
  • Ed Botchwey Codirection the regenerative Engineering and Medicine Center, a collaboration between Georgia Tech, Emory University and the University of Georgia. Its team develops advanced biomaterials that work with the body’s immune system, combined with specialized methods, to produce therapeutic cells and their beneficial by-products. They focus on innovative regenerative treatments for conditions such as sickle cell complications, serious muscle injuries and injuries affecting the mouth, face and skull.
  • John Blazeck Conceives new ways to help the immune system fight against the disease. Its team engine engine and proteins to better target cancer, improve immune therapies and develop new generation treatments.
  • Corey WilsonLove Family Professorhip, College of Engineering, built tailor -made biological systems from zero. By mixing protein engineering with genetic DIY, its team creates new powerful tools for science and medicine that help us understand how proteins and genes work.
  • Alyssa PanitchPresident of the Wallace H. Coulter department, College of Engineering, designs innovative materials that help tissues to heal better and with less scars – whether the skin, blood vessels or even joints. The biomaterials of his team promote healing inside and outside the cells, guiding the body’s natural repair process.

Learn more about Science Square Labs

Science Square Labswhich opened its doors in 2024, offers more than 368,000 square feet of premium laboratory and innovation space on 13 floors. Strategically located in front of the Georgia Tech North Avenue research area, the building is designed to bring together university institutions, startups and industry leaders.

As part of continuous expansion, Georgia Tech announces a new major lease in Science Square. Jon Mayeske of Cushman and Wakefield represented Georgia Advanced Technology Ventures, an affiliated organization of Georgia Tech, which signed a 10 -year lease from February 15, 2026, for a space of 36,364 square feet on the sixth floor of scientific square laboratories. This installation of advanced life sciences includes modern laboratory spaces, offices and pleasure areas designed to promote collaboration between researchers.

Trammell Crow is the master developer of Science Square District, scheduled for more than 2.1 million square feet of laboratories, offices and residential and retail spaces in several phases.
