Savannah, Ga. – The Savannah College of Art and Design granted the city of Savannah a subsidy of $ 972,000 to finance the technological improvements of the Savannah police service, the Savannah Morning News reported.
Funding, which is part of the SCAD Serve Community Fund, will support the tools to combat crime and public security, in particular:
- 50 license plate recognition cameras (LPR) – $ 182,500
- 70 PLZ cameras placed in previously discovered areas – $ 266,900
- 12 public security call boxes in parks and neighborhoods – $ 52,235
- Axon / Fusus video integration platform – $ 125,000
- Crime mapping and GIS (ESRI technology) – $ 105,300
The proposal originally included two Axon Air Skydio X10 drones at a expected cost of $ 240,000, according to the report. However, according to the city’s press secretary, Josh Peacock, they were replaced by two traffic control trailers and cameras in the final version.
SCAD did not publicly explain why the technology proposal was selected, according to the report.
The subsidy aims to extend the technological imprint of the SPD and to improve public security.
“We believe that this program could considerably strengthen the efforts of our community … to advance community prosperity, well-being, security and resilience,” said municipal director Jay Melder.
The mayor of Savannah, Van Johnson, praised the investment, calling it a “advanced” improvement of security tools at the city level and a model of collaboration of the municipal institution.
SCAD’s partnership with local police dates back at least 2015, when it has helped to extend the ball detection technology throughout its city center campus, according to the report. The SCAD Service Fund, launched with an investment of $ 10 million in 2024, has so far granted $ 2 million to non -profit organizations and the public sector in Savannah and Atlanta.
