Biden’s Conahan Shuttle
President Biden angered Pennsylvanians after commuting the sentence of a corrupt judge who was jailed for more than 17 years after he was caught accepting bribes for sending minors to detention centers for profit.
In what became known as the kids-for-cash scandal, former judge Michael Conahan closed a county-run juvenile detention center and shared $2.8 million in illegal payments from the builder and co-owner of two for-profit prisons. Another judge, Mark Ciavarella, also participated in the case. illicit schemethe effects of which are still felt today by victims and families.
The scandal is considered the largest judicial corruption scheme ever known in Pennsylvania, with the state Supreme Court throwing out some 4,000 juvenile convictions involving more than 2,300 children after the scheme was uncovered…Learn more
