The month of pride is underway, but in Powell River, British Columbia, at least one proud event had to be postponed due to vandalism.
The flag of pride was to be raised at the town hall of Powell River on Monday – an event that was postponed after someone cut the ropes and rig of the city’s mast during the weekend.
“Basically, reduce all flags, removed the rope and all the equipment that hoist the flags, which makes us impossible to make a flag this morning,” said Donna Gillenardo-Goudreau, president of the Qathet Pride Society.

“It happens every year, unfortunately. Last year, there is a wonderful church on the other side of the street which has rainbow stairs … which were degraded. ”
Gillenardo-Goudreau said that the city had captured video surveillance images of the Vandal or Vandals, and that the RCMP supported the group.

But she said that the incident is disappointing, especially given the small size of the Powell community.
“There are a lot of links, it’s very small, everyone knows everyone, and it is unfortunate to know that there is someone there, we may know who does this,” she said.

Next month, Qathet Pride will hold the second parade in the city of the city, and Gillenardo-Goudreau said that the organizers will not let vandalism slow them down.
She added that she hoped that it did not discourage people either to attend their events.
“We are not going to lose hope, we will certainly keep our events and be even more visibly there than before,” she said.
“The Queer community has always been part of Powell River and the Qathet regional district and will always be, so we are here and we are not going anywhere.”
