The Office of Sciences of the Ministry of Energy (DOE) selected 79 doctoral students in 56 universities and 29 states for the prestigious Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program.
SCGSR prepares doctoral students to careers of critical importance for the mission of the science office to transform our understanding of nature and to advance the energy, economy and national security of the United States. Participants receive world class training and access to advanced facilities, expertise and resources of the national Laboratories of the DoE.
“The SCGSR is a unique opportunity for the next generation of scientists to acquire practical knowledge and to train with our best minds at the National Labs Doe,” said Harriet Kung, acting director of the Doe Office of Science. “Providing this experience will help the CEE guarantee the status of the country at the forefront of discovery and innovation.”
The winners were selected from a large swimming pool of graduate candidates. The selections were based on the examination of merit by external scientific experts.
SCGSR winners work on research projects to meet critical energy challenges on national and international scales. Projects in this cohort cover six Office of Science Research programsIncluding those of artificial intelligence, the science of quantum information, microelectronics, fusion energy sciences and accelerator sciences. Prices were awarded by the second of the two annual cycles of the SCGSR program for the 2024 financial year.
Graduate students are currently pursuing doctorates in the fields of physics, chemistry, material sciences, biology, geology, planetary sciences, mathematics, engineering, IT or computer sciences that are aligned on the mission of the Office of Sciences are eligible to apply to the SCGSR program. Research projects should advance research and global doctoral training for graduates winners while providing access to expertise, resources and capacities available to the DoE national laboratories.
Since 2014, the SCGSR program has provided approximately 1,300 winners of American graduates of 170 universities in 48 states, District of Columbia., And Puerto Rico with additional funds to lead part of their thesis search to the national laboratories in collaboration with the national Laboratory scientists.
