Photos of Brian Haas Dunkerk Glos Buoy BSU1 will be deployed in 90 feet of water about six miles from the port of Dunkerk next week. The NysDec Argo ship and the Great Lakes Center staff of Buffalo State University will deploy and anchor the buoy.

For what? Because the Lake Erié is enormous. In addition, we know by the good work of our biologists of the fisheries of the Department of Environment of the State of New York only the fish, in particular the Golds, move from one end of the lake to the other – they migrate during the summer months. Note that the Lake Érié measures 241 miles long and 57 miles in diameter.

With just under 10,000 square miles of surface for fishing fishing fishermen, you see the problem. It’s a lot of water. The last variable is the depth of the fish. Indeed, the three -dimensional XYZ formula with all the variables of the location and the depth may seem intimidating. Who to call? How to learn? There is help.

Unless you contact your favorite fishing charter, there has been an addition to the arsenal of information available for fishermen, boaters and all those who could worry about knowing more. A buoy in the Great Lakes Observation System (Glos) is anchored during the summer months at around six miles off the port of Dunkerk. As part of the Glos system, it is identified as BSU1, Dunkerk Buoy. The complex buoy is installed each year, supervised, withdrawn, then maintained in winter by the Grand Lakes Center by Buffalo State University. Operational financing comes from subsidies via Glos, with assistance at local bull work on the water of the research unit on the peaches of Nysdec Lake Erie in Dunkirk.

Incredibly, I have just discovered this precious fisherman’s resource for the first time last year while taking my fishing granddaughter with Captain Dennis Young aboard his well-equipped “for your only sporting eyes” (716-316-4974).

In short, the Glos group provides end -to -end data services that support science, policy, management and industry in the Great Lakes. Most importantly, for fishermen and boaters, buoy investments provide critical data such as water, wind, waves, water flow models, etc.

One of the most essential things for fishermen and boaters is water temperature, wind and waves. Above this, the buoy provides a water temperature every two meters high at the bottom in 90 feet of water (where it is anchored). We can identify the location of the thermocline (depth) and the limnology of the lake. Golden schools are generally located very close to the thermocline.

Learn more about Glos. This group works as a 501C3 non-profit group to allow easy access to the lake data in real time, historical and predictive that the Great Lakes region in the United States and Canada must know. Will Glos be affected by all the recent cuts for federal funding withdrawals? This is a big question. I hope not. Glos has adopted a user -oriented approach to organize technologies, people and processes used to monitor large lakes.

They have built a system that can be shared via our mobile phones and laptops. Glos is one of the 11 regional associations of the integrated ocean observation system (IOOS). IOOS is a partnership between the federal, regional, academic and private parties that work to provide data and forecasts to improve security, improve the economy and protect our environment.

Since this weekend, the Dunkirk buoy has not yet been installed for 2025. The state of the Great Lakes Center Suny Buffalo indicated that it was ready for the deployment at the beginning of next week – if the wind forecast allows. To follow it, visit https://seagull.glos.org/data-conole/160. Once the buoy in place, you will instantly access the data on water quality, water temperature, air temperature, direction and wind speed, wave heights and wave data. This convenience places you in the driver’s headquarters for your fishing or pleasure navigation experience, giving you the power to make informed decisions, including trends and forecasts.

Glos is looking for people to help connect their local communities with glos. To help Glos Seagull reach more people, it could be the boats, the marina, the conservation club or other interested groups. It could be as simple as putting a sign of QR code in your club or sharing a leaflet, or you can have other ideas to help share this precious Glos resource.

I have to love the outdoors.
