Drew Barrymore is undoubtedly a good witch.
The actress and talk show host worked magic on The Drew Barrymore Show, surprising Wicked star Ariana Grande with the original Glinda wand from the 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz.
Grande plays Glinda in Wicked, the new film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical that serves as a prequel to the L. Frank Baum film Wizard of Oz, telling the story of Glinda and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), the Wicked Witch of the West.
Glinda is a little obsessed with wands, so Barrymore pulled out the ultimate one. “I have something extremely exciting and special,” she told Grande. “It actually belonged to the Smithsonian and now it’s privately owned. But for the purposes of our session, they loaned it to us.”
“Take out Glinda’s original wand, please,” Barrymore ordered his team as Grande sat stunned.
“Are you serious right now?” Grande asked, before pretending to run off the set with the wand, saying, “Thanks guys, it’s been fun.” Yeah, just kidding. I’m kidding.
Barrymore noted how Grande, dressed in pink, seemed to be a natural fit for this piece of cinema history. “You look so perfect in that,” Barrymore told her.
“How did you do it, how did you do that?” Grande was speechless. Barrymore explained that once they knew Grande would be a guest, the entire crew and production team rallied to get the original wand as a special gift for Grande and the viewers.
Unfortunately, Grande didn’t get to keep the wand, which was on loan from its owners. But maybe if she clicks her heels three times it will show up again.
The pop star has had a long-standing relationship with the character Glinda, having fallen in love with the show as a child when her mother took her to see the original cast on Broadway. Great and original Broadway Glinda, Kristin Chenowethhave maintained a close bond for years – and Chenoweth was officially able to pass the baton (and make a brief appearance) with the launch of the new film which is breaking box office records.
The full segment with Grande will air on Thursday, December 5. The Drew Barrymore Show airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings.
