The Sports and Entertainment district of the city center is presented with a signed understanding protocol
San Antonio (April 4, 2025) -The city of San Antonio, the county of Bexar and the San Antonio Spurs have taken an important first step towards the creation of a new sports and entertainment district of the city center, by moving the San Antonio Spurs in a downtown arena and by reinventing the area around the Frost Bank Center. Friday, the city of San Antonio, the county of Bexar and San Antonio Spurs signed an non -binding memorandum of understanding (MOU), showing their desire to work in collaboration to plan and achieve these objectives.
“This agreement to continue a sports and entertainment district of the city center which includes Spurs represents a common commitment to the future of our community,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “This also allows us to start a thoughtful and transparent process – not only to explore what will be necessary to finance this project, but also to engage directly with our residents to better understand their needs and priorities. San Antonio deserves world -class opportunities, and our residents are worth having a voice to shape them. ”
Sports and Entertainment District will combine sports, entertainment, restaurants, stores and residential uses to attract residents and tourists, stimulate economics and create a common space accessible to the whole community. The district will include an extension of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, a new hotel in the Congress Center, a terrestrial bridge over the I-37 to connect the east side in the city center, improvements to Alamodome, a renovation of the John Wood justice palace in a live entertainment place, mixed development development, improved infrastructure and a new spurs arena.
“I am happy that we have worked together to finalize this memorandum of understanding. We are impatiently awaiting a potential tax election at the place of November to allow voters to express their opinion on the new spurs arena, which is the only element of the Marvel project involving the county of Bexar”, declared the county judge of Bexar, Peter Sakai. “The tax on the premises will also be essential so that we can deliver my commitment to redeveloping the east side and using some of these funds to pay for the improvements and improvements essential to the Frost Bank Center, Freeman Coliseum and the surroundings.”
San Antonio Spurs are an emblematic NBA basketball team with deep roots in the economy and culture of San Antonio and the county of Bexar.
From 1973 to 1993, the Spurs played in Hemisfair Arena, a city center which was finally shaved, before moving to Alamodome. In November 1999, the voters approved the tax on the county sites to finance the construction of a basketball arena for the Spurs. The Spurs left the Alamodome for the Frost Bank Center belonging to the county in 2002. The lease of the Spurs at the Frost Bank Center expires in 2032.
“We appreciate the partnership between the city and the county while we take measures together to explore a future arena of the spurs in the city center,” said Spurs CEO, RC Buford. “This is an exciting project which, in our view, presents the opportunity to energize our economy, strengthen our community and position San Antonio for long -term success.”
