While female sports continue to settle new files For attendance and audience, the world sports editor Ricardo Zuniga explains how to double its industrial coverage of the biggest stories, teams, stars and leagues:

Describe the coverage of female sports by AP. What should the public know what we cover and how?

The Associated Press has a long -standing commitment to female sports – highlighted by our coverage of WNBA, female university basketball and our Top 25 – which has established the standard in industry for decades. In recent years, we have widened this solid base with important investments to add regular coverage of the Professional Hockey League (PWHL), the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and other sports, going beyond the game coverage with a deep narration in all formats.

This allowed a wide range of deeply unique to AP narration opportunities. I would call a couple:

Why is it important for AP to invest to cover these stories?

The public has requested broader and deeper coverage of female sports for some time – and AP was at the forefront of the desire to provide it. We witnessed the dazzling increase in the popularity of the NCAA female tournament and the WNBA, with record attendance and notes for both, as well as the constant increase in women’s football, golf and tennis. Most of the biggest names in the 2024 summer games in Paris were women – Simone Biles, Coco Gauff, Sha’Carri Richardson, Katie Ledecky. However, we know the coverage of female sports in the media industry be late The coverage of men and the AP are located unique to help fill this gap. Our coverage goes beyond the games and focuses not only on the news and the challenges that women face in sport, but we aim to raise their stories and bring them to the widest possible public.

What can expect that customers and the public expect AP in the coming months?

Our coverage of the NCAA female tournament this month will continue to grow with more dedicated resources. We will also provide wide coverage of the European Women’s Football Championship in Switzerland this summer, with several journalists and photographers across the country, as well as the complete coverage of the Champions League women’s final in Lisbon. We continue to tell the growth of PWHL and NWSL, while preparing for some 2026 winter games for women who will be the biggest names in Milano-Cortina.

Something else to add?

I am happy to share that we have created a sports course this year focused on women in sports, a position that will provide a unique opportunity to a journalist at the start of his career to report some of the biggest news and stories about female sports.
