The University of Dordt recently devoted the John J. and Henry J. Spronk Animal Science Education Center, a advanced multi-species establishment designed to improve practical learning and research for students in agriculture.
The building of 167 on 62 feet includes a closed area of 40 feet by 50 feet, which includes an entry space, an area for preparing food, toilets and mechanical and storage spaces. The western and east ends of the barn each have open zones of 65 on 50 feet designated for animals with flexible reception options. The installation, located at the Agriculture Management Center, is part of Dordt’s continuous efforts to provide relevant experiences to industry to students who are preparing to be used in the fields of agriculture and animal sciences.
In recognition of their grandfather, John J. Spronk, and the father, Henry J. Spronk – who emigrated and established their family farm in Minnesota – Spronk Brothers III provided support for the building. Celebrating their deep ancestral roots in the agriculture and the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Spronk family humbly provides funding for this installation, supporting the education of future farmers and seekers of kingdoms.
“We are grateful to the vision and investment of the Spronk family in Dordt students,” said Dr. Holly de Vries, assistant professor of agriculture in Dordt. “The opening of this building means that we have a space that is specific to us – the one that invites us to dream more of what practical learning could look like our students, so that they can live their vocation as a guardian of the creation of God.”
A dedication ceremony took place on Friday May 2, bringing together students, teachers, former students and members of the community to celebrate the completion of the building and thank those who made this possible.
