County of Polk, Florida – major stages of lung cancer treatment occurs throughout the Tampa Bay region.
Doctors of Lakeland Regional Health are now equipped with advanced robotic technology to better detect lung cancer.
“Here we have a controller who moves robotic arms. Any movement I put here, you can see the robotic arm moving the catheter. In the catheter himself, we have a camera that we can really see what we are looking at, “said Dr. Yatin Kheti, Pulmonary chief at Lakeland Regional Health.
Intuitive Ion Intuitive Ion Navigation Bronchoscopy allows doctors easier to lesions and collect tissue samples for biopsy in places that they could not reach before. The procedure reduces complications in patients and improves early detection.
“With these reduced complications, we can go more aggressive to these more aggressive and much earlier lesions to establish this diagnosis as soon as possible and help get a remedy for the patient,” said Dr. Kheti.
Lung cancer remains the deadliest form of cancer in the United States.
“More and more people who have not smoked are now presenting us with lung cancer, younger patients, women, etc. We really have to push all this idea of screening in the community, “said Dr. Mathew Ninan, thoracic surgeon and founder of Florida Lung Health Coalition.
Ninan specializes in robotic pulmonary surgery. His non -profit organization, Florida Lung Health Coalition, strives to stimulate screening for lung cancer. Patients can now pass the Firstlook pulmonary test, a very sensitive blood test.
“It takes 5 to 10 cm3 of additional blood and they can really test if you are at high risk of obtaining cancer or if you are not,” said Ninan.
Increase in early detection to cure patients with lung cancer like Verrie Dewey. Dewey was diagnosed after being screened last March.
“They had caught it early because I have been smoking for 55 years. It’s incredible to see how they could help me and save my life, “said Dewey.
A more recent and better treatment helps patients to live longer.
