FRance has Unauthorized to use smartphones in primary or secondary schools since 2018, saying that this would help children concentrate, reduce their use of social media and mitigate online intimidation. The Netherlands launched a similar ban in January 2024. Hungary followed the step later that year. Legislators in Great Britain are considering similar measures. The key question they face is whether the ban on smartphones in schools offers mental health benefits.
