Recent data from Press Ganey, reflecting contributions of more than 1.4 million health care employees, reveals that after an initial post -paid rebound, employee’s commitment reduced slightly in 2024 – a decrease of 0.02 on a scale of 5 points. This downward trend has gone through almost all roles. More specifically, the most steep drops were observed in doctors and providers of advanced practices, the scores falling from 0.06 and 0.08 respectively.

So what leads this slowdown after last year’s positive impetus?

To explore this question, the American Hospital Association (AHA) and Press Ganey have teamed up with leaders of seven various health care systems – including leaders of human resources, nursing heads and main doctors – to have an overview of their employee and doctor experience strategies. Our goal was to better understand the challenges they face today and the tactics they use to overcome them.

Challenges to conduct the experience of employees and doctors

According to a series of group discussions and workshops with the group of managers, four key challenges emerged in the experience of employees and doctors.

  1. Competing priorities. Health care organizations are confronted with the constant challenge of balancing multiple critical performance areas – patient experience, employee experience, doctors, safety and quality experience. Each of these areas is vital and deserves meticulous attention and planning. However, tackling them in isolation can dilute the impact. Most Successful organizations Integrate these priorities into a unified strategic approach.
  2. Prioritize and manage change. Health care is imbued with deep traditions. But a state of mind of “we have always done so in this way” creates obstacles to progress. Resistance to the adoption of new processes, technologies or strategies is common, but will prevent an organization from following key progress. Overcoming this inertia requires solid leadership, clear communication and a good case on how the change benefits employees and patients.
  3. Psychological security. The creation of an environment where team members feel safe to share the comments is essential. Psychological security Must be integrated into organizational values and reinforced on each occasion; Respect must be hygiene hygiene. When individuals believe that their voices are heard and that their contribution leads to a significant change, confidence is deepened, engagement increases and innovation develops.
  4. Plead in favor of the experience of employees and doctors. The most persistent challenge is perhaps to obtain complete membership in senior management for having made the investment in the workforce. The creation of the investment case in the current environment limited to resources begins with data showing how the experience of employees and doctors is directly linked to the results of patients and financial. He also calls convincing and relatable examples. See how other organizations take advantage of the advantages of investment in the caregiver’s experience shows what is possible and creates a convincing appeal.

Chris Derrienzo, MD, is the main vice-president of the AHA and chief medicine and president of health research and the AHA educational trust. Nell Buhlman is administrative director and head of the strategy at Press Ganey.
